If you spot a marine animal, follow established best practices to cope with the situation appropriately and safely.

Safety procedures

If you spot a marine animal, adopt  the following safety procedures:

  • call 1 1 2 and contact the Coast Guard by radio (distress frequency VHF channel 16) providing the requested information, including: place where the animal was sighted, distance from the coast/shore, species identification (turtles, cetaceans, sharks, birds, pinnipeds, etc.), number of specimens and presumed characteristics (length, weight), condition (alive, dead, decomposed, carcass, skeleton), presence of wounds, presence of tags, etc.;
  • if possible, do not leave the place of sighting and wait until rescue/removal personnel arrive;
  • take photographs/make videos to be shared with rescue/removal personnel;
  • if you spot cetaceans that are alive, keep a distance of at least 100 metres from them;
  • follow the rescuers’ instructions.
