Safety procedures

If you find a human body in the sea or on the beach, adopt the following safety procedures:

  • do not move or lift the body onto the boat;
  • if there is a risk that the body could sink, try to keep it afloat with the help of a boat hook or by securing it with a rope (should the body sink, report the precise location where the event has occurred – exact geographical coordinates);
  • call 1 1 2 and contact the Coast Guard by radio (distress frequency VHF channel 16) providing the requested information, including: position, distance from the coast, current weather and sea conditions, identifying information concerning the body (sex, apparent age, hair, build, any particular identifying marks, clothing);
  • follow the rescuers’ instructions.
