If you find a weapon of war at sea, follow established good practices to cope with the situation appropriately and safely.

Safety procedures

In you discover a weapon of war at sea, adopt the following safety procedures:

  • keep calm;
  • Do not touch or move the device under any circumstances;
  • mark the area to prevent access to the place where the discovery has occurred;
  • call 1 1 2 and contact the Coast Guard by radio (distress frequency VHF channel 16) providing the requested information, including:: position (geographic coordinates), distance from the coast, current  weather and sea conditions, identifying elements of the device such as shape (cylindrical, spherical, tapered, etc.), identifying details (writing, acronyms, fins, protrusions, holes, etc.), external appearance (colour, smooth, rough, corroded, etc.), estimated dimensions (length, width, diameter), material, conditions at the time of discovery (stuck between rocks, covered with sand or mud, etc.), condition of the device (intact, broken, dented, etc.), any fume emission and/or leaks of liquids from the presumed weapon of war;
  • follow the rescuers’ instructions.
