Safety procedures
In the event of an aircraft accident at sea, adopt the following safety procedures:
- keep calm;
- if you spot one or more people in the sea, throw them the life jackets that are on board;
- get any other security equipment ready for use, including: lifebuoy, first aid kit, distress signal kit (smoke buoy, red hand flares), sound signaling devices (whistle), life raft, etc.;
- try to keep people in need of assistance in sight;
- do not expose yourself to danger trying to rescue people;
- try to recover the person from the water, only if it is safe to do so;
- call 1 1 2 and contact the Coast Guard by radio (distress frequency VHF channel 16) providing the requested information, including: position (geographic coordinates) of the aircraft crashing into the sea, distance from the coast, type of aircraft, number of people spotted at sea, presence of injured people, presence of people in need of special assistance (women, children, elderly people), current weather and sea conditions etc.;
- communicates the presence of any spills/pollution at sea;
- follow the rescuers’ instructions.
